The term Uncle Sam dates back to the Revolutionary War and a beef inspector named Samuel Wilson, who was very popular among his employees and affectionately known as Uncle Sam. After finishing his inspection, he would send beef to a contractor named Elbert Anderson, where it was stamped E.A.U.S. When a worker asked what the letters stood for, a cohort replied jokingly that he didn't know, unless they stood for “Elbert Anderson and Uncle Sam.” The joke spread widely. The abbreviation U.S. was commonly said to mean Uncle Sam, thus making the nickname Uncle Sam synonymous with United States.

In old Europe, it was believed that the soul of the first corpse buried in a new graveyard would belong to the devil.

Nowadays we say that a short guy who's insecure about his height has a Napoleon complex. But Napoleon wasn't that short; he was a robust five feet, six inches—average height for Frenchmen of the time. He just hung around with a lot of tall guys, making him look short in comparison.
